Sumi is an AI manga translator built for manga, manhwa and webtoon readers. Instead of placing a plain translation box on top of the panel, Sumi removes the original lettering, restores the artwork underneath and re-typesets the translated language inside the original speech bubbles and text areas. Vertical Japanese lettering can remain vertical, so the finished page stays closer to the visual rhythm of the source.
The workflow is designed for reading rather than document translation. Open or provide a page, let Sumi detect and translate the text, review the re-lettered result and download or continue reading the translated page. Sumi handles the visual part of translation as well as the words: text placement, bubble boundaries and the surrounding art remain part of the result.
Sumi is available on the web, iPhone and through browser extensions, so readers can choose the workflow that fits where they already read. The web version provides a quick way to translate a page without installing an app. The iPhone experience supports a dedicated reader and offline on-device translation. Browser extensions make it possible to translate pages from the browser without moving the reading workflow to a separate tool.
Sumi supports manga from Japanese, Korean and Chinese sources and can translate into multiple reader languages. It is intended for pages that the reader already has access to. Sumi does not host, index or crawl manga libraries.
The service is freemium. A reader can translate one page without an account. Creating an account adds five pages, and readers can claim five more pages each day. Sumi Pro starts at $6.99 per month, with a $69.99 annual option. There is no free trial.
