PowerballTax is a free, ad-free web tool and embeddable widget that instantly calculates the after-tax take-home amount for any U.S. Powerball jackpot across all 50 states and the lump-sum vs annuity options.
PowerballTax is a lightweight, fully responsive financial utility that answers the most common lottery question: “How much do I actually take home after taxes?” It takes the advertised jackpot amount and the state where the ticket was purchased as input, and outputs the net lump-sum cash value and 30-year annuity payout after federal and state tax deductions. The tool runs entirely in the browser as a web app and is also available as a browser extension for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. It is developed by PowerballTax.com.
The calculator applies two layers of federal tax on the lump-sum cash value: a 24% flat withholding mandated by IRC §3402(q) at the claim center, and an additional top-bracket adjustment to reach the 37% marginal rate for amounts above $640,600 (2026 single-filer threshold). Then it deducts the state lottery tax rate of the ticket-purchasing state (ranging from 0% in nine states to 11% in Hawaii). The result shows both the lump-sum and 30-year annuity take-home.

A winner pays 24% federal withholding at source plus an additional ~13% to reach the 37% top bracket. State tax ranges from 0% (e.g., California, Florida) to 11% (Hawaii). On a $1B advertised prize, the lump-sum cash take-home after taxes is typically $300M–$380M.
California, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not tax Powerball winnings. Federal tax still applies everywhere.
Yes. The calculator estimates cash value at approximately 60% of the advertised annuity jackpot, then applies federal and state taxes. You can switch between "Cash lump sum" and "30-year annuity" to compare.
