Código Morse

Free browser-based Morse code translator that converts text to Morse and back, with telegraph-tone audio playback and WAV export.

Introduction

Código Morse is a free, browser-based translator that converts plain text into dots and dashes and decodes Morse code back into text as you type, with telegraph-tone audio playback and WAV export.

What is Código Morse?

Código Morse is a web tool at codigomorse.com that translates between written text and Morse code in both directions simultaneously — the opposite panel updates while you type, with no button to press. It accepts accented Portuguese characters and transliterates them to their base letters (á becomes a, ç becomes c), emitting standard dots and dashes with a space between letters and a forward slash between words. Audio playback and WAV download both run inside the browser, with no signup, account, or installation required.

What makes Código Morse stand out?
  • Live two-way conversion — typing in the "Texto" panel fills the "Código Morse" panel instantly, and pasting dots and dashes into the Morse panel decodes them back into text above it.
  • Telegraph-tone audio — the "Ouvir tudo" button plays the code at a classic telegraph pitch, and every one of the 26 letters in the alphabet table plays its own sound when clicked.
  • WAV download — "Baixar WAV" exports the converted message as an audio file, covering up to 1 minute of code per download, the same limit as in-browser playback.
  • Speed selector — Lenta, Normal, and Rápida options change the tempo of playback and of the downloaded file.
  • Typographic input tolerance — bullet and dash glyphs copied from other sites (•, –, —) are accepted alongside plain periods and hyphens.
  • ITU timing — dot lasts 1 unit, dash 3 units, gaps of 3 between letters and 7 between words, following ITU-R M.1677-1.
  • Ready-made examples — one-click SOS, OLÁ, and AJUDA shortcuts plus a grid of pre-converted words (BOM DIA, AMOR, EU TE AMO, ANA, MARIA) that play audio when clicked.
Who should use Código Morse?
  • Portuguese-speaking beginners: learn the alphabet from the A-to-Z table, where E is a single dot and O is three dashes, and hear each letter before writing their own name in Morse.
  • Radio amateurs and CW operators: verify the exact spelling of a word in dots and dashes or generate a short WAV file for practice.
  • Teachers and students: demonstrate Morse timing (1:3:7) in a lesson or a science-fair project about the history of telecommunications.
  • Crafters and collectors: check whether a name engraved on a Morse bracelet, necklace, or flashlight message is transcribed correctly.
What can you do with Código Morse?
  • Survival-skills practice: transcribe the SOS sequence ... --- ... to compare against whistle, mirror, or flashlight signals used in emergency training.
  • Classroom demonstration: paste a short phrase, play it aloud in the telegraph tone, and hand out the WAV file for students to decode.
  • Personal keepsakes: convert a name such as ANA, MARIA, or AMOR and confirm the pattern before engraving or printing it.
  • Ear training: listen on repeat at slow speed to distinguish I (two dots with a short gap) from two separate E letters.
How does Código Morse work?
  1. Type or paste text into the "Texto" field and the Morse version appears below it automatically.
  2. To decode, paste dots and dashes into the "Código Morse" field and the decoded message appears in the field above.
  3. Press "Ouvir tudo" to hear the result, or "Baixar WAV" to save the audio.
  4. Use "Copiar" to copy a result, "Limpar" to reset both fields, and the SOS / OLÁ / AJUDA shortcuts for ready-made examples.

FAQ
Is Código Morse free?

Yes. The translator, the audio playback, the alphabet table, and the WAV download are all free, and no account or sign-up is needed to use them in the browser.

Can I download the Morse audio as a file?

Yes. After converting your text, "Baixar WAV" produces an audio file using the classic telegraph tone and the official 1:3:7 rhythm. Each file covers up to 1 minute of code, the same limit as browser playback.

How are accented Portuguese letters handled?

The international standard defines a few accented characters, such as É (..-..), but it does not cover every Portuguese letter. To keep conversion predictable, this site transliterates á, ã, ç, and similar characters to their base letter — á becomes a, ç becomes c.

How are letters and words separated in Morse code?

In writing, letters within a word are separated by a single space and words are separated by a forward slash. In sound, the same divisions appear as pauses of about 3 time units between letters and 7 units between words.

Does the tool work on phones and tablets?

It runs entirely in a web browser, so it works on any device with a browser and no installation; the only stated limit is the 1-minute cap on audio playback and WAV output.
